Life is Crazy, so let's get crafty

Juggling an 8 to 5

Hello there.

I have been MIA for a couple of weeks, heck, maybe even a month.  I apologize.

I got a new job! It came with a new schedule for our family.  One that we have not had to worry about for a while.  There has been a huge adjustment, not just for me, but for everyone.  See, I got myself involved in quite a few things while I was “off work”.

I am a restless soul.  I have always been unable to stay put for long.  So. when I was taken off work indefinitely, I decided to get busy.

I started to turn my crafting into more of a business than just a hobby.  I have some of my crafty goods in a local store, and I sell out of my home on a regular basis.  I have also started working on my own website.  (Even though shipping scares me).

I LOVE to volunteer. I decided to become a President of a Woman’s Life Chapter, a group where women get together and help out local organizations of our choosing.  Before this, I volunteered at local non-profits on my own.  Now, I can get with like-minded women, and we can do more good together!  It is fun, and I have learned more about organizations I never thought I would (like human trafficking).

I have been on a SERIOUS health kick, eating right and working out on a regular basis.  Taking care of my body helps me take care of the people around me.  I was able to prepare the meals for my family that I knew were healthy, and not just quick and easy.

That was all before I got my 8 to 5…

I am not going to lie, it has been a struggle.

I have been trying to keep up with it all.  I have missed workouts, and slacked on some healthy meals.  There have been nights where I forgot to have my daughter do her homework.  I think I forgot to mention my daughter is just as busy as me: taekwondo, cooking and craft classes, seasonal sports, and most importantly studying.

I have a fantastic support system.  My family and I all work together to get it all done!  I am so grateful for all the help they have given me these past couple weeks.

I am sure they cannot wait until I go back to school 🙂

Seriously, I have created before and after school schedules for my daughter.  I am working on our family calendar, as well as my own.  HOWEVER, if anyone has any fantastic ideas for keeping my busy life on track, please do not hesitate to let me know.

I promise, I will try to be much better about keeping up with the blog.  I truly love sharing with you all!

Dark Night in The Shoe

Tomorrow is the very first time The Ohio State University buckeyes will be wearing all black uniforms.  They teamed with Nike, to make these unique uniforms, for the night game against Penn State at the horseshoe.

If you don’t know by now,  I love the buckeyes.  These are some of my favorite crafts to do for myself,  and others.  So, of course I had to make a wreath to match these uniforms.

They are calling it “Dark Night in The Shoe”

Friday the 13th Wreath

EEEEEEK.

I have been so busy lately that I have not posted, and for that I am sorry.  But, I am so excited to finally share one of the Halloween wreaths I had been working on.

I should probably also share, that I LOVE decorating and crafting for Halloween.  So I will also share some of my other crafts in another post 🙂

Here it is… My Jason Vorhees Friday the 13th Wreath!!!

Ok.  It is not actually mine.  I really wanted to keep it though 🙂  It was a surprise gift and the receiver was VERY happy.

It makes me happy when my customers and friends are happy.  I really enjoy making these wreaths.  I put a lot of work into them, and try to put my own little creative twist on people’s visions.

What I did…

The bloody fingers were originally glow in the dark witch fingers with really long nails!  I had fun turning them into bloody appendages and placing them throughout the wreath.

The mask was just a plain old hockey mask that I had to paint several times to make it look old and weathered.

The signs were leftover pieces of wood that I had from previous projects that I thought would be fun to paint with the infamous “CH CH CH, AH AH AH”

Just thought I would give you a brief snippet into my creative process.  I hope you all have a creepy Halloween  😉

11 Reasons You Should Stop Watching Television Now

“It’s time to stop watching television and start living instead”.

WOW.

I simply love this. It truly resonates with me and my family. I have a child who is addicted to Disney, and I despise it. I never believed Disney was passing along positive messages to my child. It is more about status and making fun of other children.

This article is the reason I would love to get rid of TV in my household for good. It is going to be a struggle. If anyone has any ideas. Please let me know.

Few people realize the number of issues that television causes in our life.

While many people will argue that a little bit of TV never hurt anyone, the amount of a “little bit” is constantly in debate. A Neilson report found that the average American watches more than 34 hours of television each week.

If that number doesn’t shock you I don’t know what will. If you’re now thinking “Those people are crazy—I’d never watch that much” then I invite you to do your own maths. Simply write down all the shows you watched this week and how long they were (including commercials if it was live) plus movies, YouTube videos, etc. and work out roughly how much time you spent in front of the screen.

That number is how many hours you’re losing each week…

Every month should be Suicide Prevention Month

While I understand the “Awareness” of certain conditions and diseases switches each month, I believe mental health and suicide should be a year round awareness.

  1. Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in young people
  2. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S.
  3. 1 in 5 people live with a mental health condition

Mental health conditions are not going away either.  Unlike cancers, and other diseases, there is a negative stigma attached to these individuals and their diagnosis.  Making it even harder to rally awareness and positive support.

The thing is, we have the ability to help and support people.

Start here on the NAMI get involved page

Want to Volunteer with NAMI

If you know someone who is thinking of suicide, please share this with them.  sps

I work, volunteer, and have personal dealings with mental health.  I would bet everyone on has interacted with someone on some level of mental illness.

You could save a life.

A little motivation for your Monday

image

Just thought I’d share this Monday motivation with you all.

So many people despise Mondays.  I get it.  Everyone is tired from all the fun festivities over the weekend.  No one wants to go back to work.  The list goes on.

However, I see it as a new beginning.  A way to start fresh.  To set goals and crush them this week.  To, finally, start the project I’ve been putting off!

I hope you all can take a second this morning and do a couple things for me.

• Close your eyes
• Reflect on all the greatness of last week
• Think of all the greatness to come this week

Now get our there and crush your goals 🙂

Happy Monday

DIY Canvas Galaxy/Tardis Shoes

tardisshoescollage

Wizard World Comic Con was this past weekend in Columbus, Ohio.  While that may not mean a lot to some people, it does in our family.  My daughter has been planning her outfit for MONTHS.  Yes, you saw that right.

Let me tell you a little story…

This summer, my daughter and I had the luxury of being together ALL THE TIME.  We both became obsessed with Doctor Who.  Ahh, but of course, when it was time for my daughter to go to bed, Momma could not stop her Netflix binge.  Needless to say,  I watched pretty much all the episodes without my daughter.  She definitely does not let me forget it either.

So, my daughter decided she wanted a Doctor Who Tardis dress for Comic Con.  I have absolutely no desire to learn how to use a sewing machine, so my SIL got to work for me.  About a week before Comic Con, I was informed that I was supposed to be making Tardis Canvas shoes to match this wonderful dress.   (If I was told this before,  I most certainly do not remember).

Anyways, what do you do when you need a little inspiration with a project you have never done.  PINTEREST of course.  I am pretty sure I spent a whole day pinning every Doctor Who craft out there, before even starting the shoes.  OOpps.

The Canvas Galaxy Tardis Shoes

  • Cheap Canvas shoes- in case of a mess up
  • Use Acrylic Paints on hand
  • Tape around parts you do not want to get paint on
  • Draw an outline of your Tardis (if you want)
  • Get to painting
  • DO NOT forget to put some sort of coating over the shoes

I was really just winging it.  The hardest part for me was the galaxy, which I had never done before.  I just did alternate layers of black and fun colors, added some glitter and starts, and BAM.  The best part, my daughter LOVED her shoes.  Her whole outfit looked amazing and she got a ton of compliments on how cool she looked, which made her happy.

And that, makes me happy.tardisdresscollage
